Most Asked

What is vaporization?

Vaporization is the process by which material is gently heated to release active chemicals without combustion. By heating to a temperature below combustion, desired active compounds boil off into the air for inhalation without any smoke, soot, ash, tar, or carcinogens.

Can I use my Spyre in places where smoking is prohibited?

Yes, because no combustion occurs, there is no second hand smoke. Vaporizers can be used in places where smoking is prohibited. However, UpToke recommends you respect those around you and educate them to the benefits of vapor before using your Spyre. Although legal, it’s important to consider the local policies of companies and buildings before vaporizing.

What materials are recommended for use in the Spyre?

The Spyre is designed to accommodate a wide variety of loose leaf plant material, from tobacco to chamomile to sage and beyond. Cartridges are available separately for medicinal oils and concentrates (coming 2015).

How does the Spyre work?

Simply place your material into the ceramic grinding chamber, replace the magnetic top, twist, and inhale. A pressure sensor monitors the intensity of your breath and activates the heater on demand. A CPU regulates heater voltage dynamically based on chamber temperature and inhalation speed. No learning curve, no buttons.

What kind of heater is used in the Spyre?

The Spyre uses a proprietary bulb heater which consists of a tungsten filament encased in quartz glass. By buffering heat with quartz, a gentle indirect heating is achieved, which provides a clean, fast, flavorful vapor.

How is the Spyre different from an e-cig or pen vape?

The Spyre is quite different from an e-cig or pen vape. A better comparison would be an “electronic cigar”. Made from medical grade materials, the Spyre makes no compromises on quality and value. Over 2.5 years was spent engineering the Spyre to achieve perfect vaporization of a variety of loose leaf plant matter. Our upcoming cartridge system allows for clean and easy vaporization of essential oils and concentrates as well.

Vaporization

What is vaporization?

Vaporization is the process by which material is gently heated to release active chemicals without combustion. By heating to a temperature below combustion, desired active compounds boil off into the air for inhalation without any smoke, soot, ash, tar, or carcinogens.

Is vaporization as potent as smoking?

Yes, vaporization has been shown to be more efficient than smoking. Desired active chemicals are gently released into the air for inhalation, and harmful substances are left behind.

How is vapor different from smoke?

Vapor is thinner and lighter than smoke, and sometimes harder to see under certain light. Vapor contains desired active chemicals but does not carry soot, ash, tar, carcinogens, or other small particulate matter typically inhaled when smoking.

How thick is the vapor produced? Does it smell?

The thickness of vapor produced depends on the length and intensity of draw by the user. Vapor has a light, airy smell that dissipates quickly and does not remain in clothing or furniture.

Can I use my Spyre in places where smoking is prohibited?

Yes, because no combustion occurs, there is no second hand smoke. Vaporizers can be used in places where smoking is prohibited. Product Use

How fast does the Spyre heat-up?

Our proprietary bulb heater is the fastest on the market, reaching 190 C (374 F) in the span of a single breath (2.5 seconds).

What temperature does the Spyre operate at?

The Spyre is designed to maintain an ideal operating temperature of 190 C (374 F), but our CPU and firmware are able to make dynamic adjustments to temperature based on user inhalation.

How is the Spyre different from an e-cig or pen vape?

The Spyre is quite different from an e-cig or pen vape. A better comparison would be an “electronic cigar”. Made from medical grade materials, the Spyre makes no compromises on quality and value. Over 2.5 years were spent engineering the Spyre to achieve perfect vaporization of a variety of loose leaf plant matter. Our upcoming cartridge system allows for clean and easy vaporization of essential oils and concentrates as well.

What is the air path through the Spyre? What materials are used?

The air path was designed to produce clean and flavorful vapor. The vaporization chamber is ceramic with stainless steel grinding teeth, and the heater is fully encased in quartz glass. These are the only materials that come into contact with plant matter. The air path is sealed and separate from electronics and power systems.

How large is the vaporization chamber?

The ceramic grinding chamber doubles as the vaporization chamber to eliminate prep work and ensure even heating. It measures a bit over a cubic cm of open space around the heater.

How do I charge my Spyre battery? How long does it take to charge? What capacity is the battery? How long does it hold a charge?

A micro-USB port is cleverly hidden in a slide-out tray behind the LED ring. Charge using the included USB charging collar, or use a standard mobile phone micro-USB charger. The Spyre charges to full in about 2.75 hours. The internal battery is 3000 mAh and provides up to 250 puffs per charge, depending on use. The Spyre boasts an idle time of about 15 days.

Will I damage my Spyre by overcharging? Do I need to drain the battery before charging?

No, the Spyre contains internal micro-electronics to regulate charging automatically. No discharging is needed.

What voltage does the Spyre USB wall charger accept?

The Spyre USB wall adapter accepts 90-264 Volts AC allowing international travel without a voltage adapter (socket adapter may be needed).

How do I clean my Spyre? How long should I wait before cleaning? How often do I need to clean it?

To clean your Spyre, simply rinse your magnetic grinder lid in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. The mouthpiece separates from the grinder lid to make cleaning of the internal metal screen easier. The ceramic grinding chamber can be partially submerged, although we recommend against completely submerging the Spyre. Preferably use a Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean hard to reach places within the grinding chamber. Ensure all Spyre components are completely dry and all isopropyl alcohol has evaporated before reassembling and using your Spyre.

Allow sufficient time for all components to cool to room temperature before attempting to clean your Spyre. Cleaning requirements vary depending on usage, but we recommend cleaning your Spyre at least once a month.

How do the essential oil cartridges work?

Essential oil cartridges fit inside the Spyre’s ceramic grinder in place of our loose leaf heater. A sensor detects the cartridge and the CPU automatically adjusts voltage accordingly. Essential oil cartridges are due for release in 2015.

How did you get started?

UpToke started with the idea that vaporization and herbal medicine were on a collision course. By combining the ease of an e-cigar with the function of a full conduction/convection vaporizer, the benefits of vaporization become available to the mainstream public. Vaporizers are ready for the high technology and beautiful design enjoyed by other mainstream industries. We’re raising the bar to promote health and wellbeing.
